Wyoming, 1876: Duncan und Susanna McKaskel wollen gemeinsam mit ihrem kleinen Sohn Tom in den „wilden“ Westen des Landes übersiedeln und einen Neuanfang beginnen. Doch in dem kleinen Dorf Bender's Place machen sie Bekanntschaft mit Doc Shabitt und seiner Bande, ein verhängnisvolles Zusammentreffen. Denn fortan stellt ihnen die Bande nach, da sie Gold und andere Wertgegenstände auf ihrem Wagen vermutet. Zudem hat es ihnen die attraktive Susanna angetan und besonders Red Hayle würde dieses „Wildpferd“ gerne zähmen. Allerdings hilft der geheimnisvolle Fremde Con Vallian der Familie, der mit der Bande, und besonders dem Halbblut Ute noch eine Rechnung offen zu haben scheint. Seine wahren Ziele sind allerdings etwas unklar und auch er scheint ein Auge auf Susanna geworfen zu haben.
